Reading and going at your own pace…

February 2, 2019

As an author of both young adult and middle grade fiction; and as a home-schooling mom, I feel it is important to share this with you. My dear friend; Dana Mentink posted a video on Instagram that contains a VERY important message about reading…   Evidently, someone made a comment on twitter about teachers stifling … More Reading and going at your own pace…

When Catharsis turns into Creativity

March 30, 2018

It always intrigues me when I start out with one goal in mind. . . I think (I don’t really plan or plot. . . I just start writing), then I begin the first draft with a vision in mind of the overall story (or series). . . and when I say I have a … More When Catharsis turns into Creativity

I saw this quote last night after a particularly emotional bout of writing. I admit, I did not expect the depth of emotion this latest project had pulled from me. The stories my daughter and I are working on are meant to be light and fun, but something happened with this latest one. It's taken me back to dark days... back to some of the darkest days of my life. And with all of that in mind, I felt an especially strong response when I saw this quote on the wall of a fellow author I follow. Why is it always the first assumption (when one person compares themself to another) that they must be jealous? Why must jealousy be the obvious answer... the acceptable answer... the expected answer? Why can't we, as fellow human beings, believe that someone can honestly be happy for someone else who has had a great triumph - and still feel sad thinking that they may never achieve their own goals. That is not jealousy. It is a complex and intricate set of emotions that defines who we are and how we've gotten there. Jealousy is too simple to explain the way I feel when someone does a little happy dance over their great news - and I put on a happy face, while trying desperately to ignore (for the moment) the mountain of despair that will settle again on my shoulders once they've moved on to celebrate with someone else. Perhaps if we could all be a little more understanding of our fellow humans, rather than judging and jumping to conclusions, life just might get a bit easier for all of us. Not to impugn our illustrious former Commander-in-Chief, but... my own experience has given me a very different perspective on this particular quote: "Comparison is nothing more than the lie the bullies of the world desperately need us to believe." - JC Morrows (a direct quote from our WIP) #authorsofinstagram #authorlife #amwriting #teenfiction #yafiction #mgfiction #fictionforgirls #BookLove #authorquotes #lifequotes #booklife #princessstories #fairytaleretelling #endbullying #stopbullying #truth #metoo
Last year I put down a book because I ran across a certain nasty word within the pages (a book I had paid quite a lot of $$ for at #SOKY2018 because I wished to support a fellow author; who had assured me it was written for teens). ... Last week I put down another book because of that same nasty word (thankfully, this one was a library book). ... Yesterday, my dear, sweet, precious, amazing, strong, moral, upstanding @macymorrows put down (quite forcefully) a book I had just purchased for her because of that same nasty word (I am so proud of my girl. She chose her principles and she stands up for them!). ... Today I discovered (thanks to an Instagram post from an author who has been recommended to me many many times) that I will NEVER pick up one of her books to read or buy because of... You guessed it... That same NASTY word! ... When will the madness stop!?! When will authors realize that they need to learn to write better... that they do NOT need nasty language to keep a reader hooked... that their writing should be good enough WITHOUT nasty language... that they would likely double their readership if they would keep things clean!?!?!?!?!?! ... Or else retailers NEED to realize that READERS need a warning ⚠ attached to books with nasty language!!! ... Who's with me?!? ... #authorsofinstagram #authorlife #readersofinstagram #Reading #Books #booksofinstagram #bookrecs #language #teenreads #cleanreads #morals #writing #authors #cryingoutforchange
I'm not much a fan of Valentine's Day personally, but I'm thinking this would be a perfect Valentine's gift for the Bibliophile in your life! I know I love it! (so much that I have 2 copies - and you can't have either of them. 1 is signed and 1 is an exclusive edition... MINE!) ... #ValentinesDay #Heartless #Books #Bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #BookLove #EpicReads #Wonderland #BackStory #OriginStory #authorsofinstagram
Quickest way to get me to put down a book... Nasty language! And on the first page of this one (NOT The Falconer). Oh well... Back to The Cruel Prince, which had gotten shuffled due to my having to renew it, but is now back on top due to the fact that I know at least there's no nasty language in it. #amReading #Books #authorsofinstagram #yafiction #bookstoread #Bookstagram #cleanreads #ifiwantedtohearnastinessidstillbeinNashville
Yes, I was reading The Cruel Prince... However, I am now frantically reading another title from my the stack. ... Our local library @knoxcountypubliclibrary has this great program called illiad; where you can borrow books from other libraries. Only one drawback: you can't renew the books. So, when you discover the book you borrowed is due in 2 days (when you thought you had 8), you start reading. ... And now I'm reading The Falconer by Elizabeth May. ... #SteamPunk #teenreads #Books #Bookstagram #bookstoread #bookstack #library #AlternateHistory #YAreads #AmReading #readinglist #2019readingchallenge #authorlife #authorsofinstagram

What I’m reading: Evermore by Sara Holland

You know that meme that says… Or, in this case, hardback… Yeah. Evermore is one of those stories. I actually read a few other reviews for this book, and the ones that said it was not as good as the first, I wondered at. And then I read it, and WOW! I do not get […]
